All About Me

I am a 63 year old retired legal nurse consultant and Vietnam vet. I served as an Army Nurse from 1966-1986 including 18 months in a combat hospital in Vietnam. Although I retired in 1986 I was called back to active duty for the first Gulf War, retiring a second time in 1992.

I have been a practicing Wiccan since 1980. I trained in the Oak, Ash, and Thorn Tradition of Wicca beginning in 1990, and received my Third Degree from OATh at Samhain 1996. I founded my own coven of Tangled Moon at Yule 1996 and ran it until we closed its doors at Midsummer 2008. I now serve as High Priestess of the Oak, Ash, and Thorn Tradition with a total of two daughter covens and one training circle. I am currently enrolled in the pastoral counseling program at Cherry Hill Seminary. I am also a Gardnerian Seeker currently working in an Outer Court..

I am also active in the SCA, where I am known as Iofa merch Macsen, a Celtic woman from southern Britain at the time of the Roman invasion. I currently reside in the Shire of Crimson River, Kingdom of Meridies; however, my primary loyalty is to my family of the Great Dark Horde.

In my not-so-copious free time I do quilting, medieval embroidery, hand spinning, weaving, gourmet cooking, reading, dressage, scuba diving, archery, and run several on-line message boards including Branwen's Cauldron at http://www.branwenscauldron.org

Yabbuts

This was brought on by a Yabbut on another message board that I post to....

I have had a number of students over the years with what I refer to as the "Yabbut Syndrome". These are students who have come to me and asked to study with my coven and who express a sincere interest in learning what we have to offer. But the truth of the matter is that they don't really want to learn from us what we have to teach. What they really want is to be handed a magical solution of all of life's problems that… Continue

Sekhmet

Sekhmet (Sakhmet, Sekhet) is one of the oldest of the Egyptian deities (Netjer) in Egyptian history. Daughter of Ra, the Sun God and King of the Gods, some of Her titles reflect her great antiquity. (Lady at the Beginning of Time and One Who Was Before The Gods Were.) As a form of the Great Mother, Sekhmet was known at the Mother of the Gods.

Sekhmet is wife and sister of Ptah who created the world through His thought and His word, and She is mother to Nefertem, a healer deity and patron God of… Continue

Where Are The Teachers and Elders

Back in the "old" days before the advent of the internet and the plethora of Wicca 101 books that were published to meet a growing cry for information on Wicca one had a tough time learning on one's own.

When I first came to Wicca in the 1980's there were only a handful of books on the subject and they weren't always easy to find. Stores didn't tend to carry them, libraries didn't stock them. About the only way you could learn was to get lucky enough to find a teacher, and teachers didn't adver… Continue

Oak, Ash, and Thorn Tradition

I thought I would share a bit of my own Tradition, the one in which I personally trained and still work.

Our roots actually go back to Southern California in the late 1960's. A young man from the Los Angeles area who went by the magical name of Valcor studied there with a couple with whom he worked. The husband was a ceremonial magician and the wife was possibly Wiccan, or at least followed a path of religious Witchcraft.

In about 1969 Valcor decided that he needed to be moving on and he hoppe… Continue

An Update of the Cat

I've managed to have a good look at BJ and the rubber band issue. It really does need to come off. He's a wriggler so I'm going to wrap him in my quilt and hold him down while I take it off. It's not done any damage that I can see.

I keep telling my housemate that it is classed as cruelty to animals and last night I told him I would be phoning the RSPCA first thing in the morning and reporting him (I had no response to lodging the complaint through their website). He proceeded to tell me that i… Continue

I hate people who are cruel to animals

My housemate has just tried to desex his male cat himself by typing a rubber band around it's balls. As far as I'm concerned that's not on so I went to the RSPCA website and reported him. I told him I would and he didn't believe me. He's now trying to get the cat out from under the house.

I got so upset when he did it. I think I get more upset when I see people cruel to animals than I do when people are cruel to each other. It's something that I really really hate and am passionate about stoppi… Continue

Dragon Dancer (Johoanna)

Yep, finally decided to do it...

Change my name that is. (I bet you were thinking something rude...lol).

I've been thinking about changing my name for most of the year. My name does not represent who I am now. My name was given to my by my Mother. My Mother and I are currently astranged, although I'm hoping that will change in years to come.

I've decided on two names. One will be my witchy name, that I use on the forums and any writing, pagan crafts, etc, I do. The other will be my new legal name. Both names will be connected… Continue

Popping my blogging cherry...

So, i'm completely newb-ish at the art of blogging. I had a live journal once, a long, long time ago (back when life had me in fits of laughter at every turn, and therefore worthy of publicising =/)... but lately i've been yearning for an outlet. Life's not throwing me so much comedy anymore; but i guess my small tragedies are equally worthy of public viewing... even if it's to have someone else to laugh at them.

Okay. So i've moved town; was in Melbourne, now in Bendigo. It's a nice place, as… Continue

Just a short verse that I wrote a few years ago

The Journey of the soul

A spark, a twinkle of light shines through the mists that travel across the waters of this land. The light has a purpose, to find a vessel in which to live.

As I travel, I have an idea in mind of what I want to experience in this lifetime, it is joy and sorrow, love and hate, beauty and ugliness. What is the best vessel in which to carry out this task?

I have traveled a time as a bird; during this time I flew high above the earth on the breath of the wind, in the calmn… Continue
